The skies over Lexington’s Jacobson Park will be lit up on Friday.

The city is sponsoring a free drone light show as part of Friday Flicks, the annual summer outdoor movie series put on by Lexington Parks and Recreation at the park on Richmond Road.

The light show — which uses drones to make light up displays in the sky — will be the first city-sponsored drone show in Lexington. Similar displays have become popular across the country, and the University of Kentucky has used drones at events, like the Tyler Childers concert in April.

Mayor Linda Gorton said the free show is a way to expand the city’s outdoor experiences for families.

“We are excited to bring this wonderful experience to our community,” Gorton said. “The drone show will light up our skies, and is sure to be an unforgettable experience for the entire family.”

The Friday Flick, “Kung Fu Panda 4,” will begin at 9 p.m. The drone show will take place at intermission around 10 p.m.

Limited accessible parking will be available. Upon entering Jacobson Park, follow the signs and directions to the outdoor screen. All audience members will be directed to park in the grass adjacent to the event space, the designated parking area.

“We are always looking for new and innovative things to enrich our parks and programs and are excited to bring this opportunity to the community,” said Amber Luallen, superintendent of Cultural Arts & Events for Lexington Parks & Recreation. “Jacobson Park will make a beautiful backdrop for the first city-produced drone show. It will be a great way to celebrate summer and Lexington’s 250th anniversary.”

In the event of rain, the drone show will moved to 10 p.m. Saturday.
