Lexington’s 3rd Kroger Marketplace is in development. What makes it different?
Lexington’s $42 million Kroger Marketplace is preparing to open its doors in spring 2026, according to previous reporting done by the Herald-Leader.
But what makes Kroger Marketplace different from regular Kroger?
Kroger Marketplace is a “larger format” store, coming in at around 120,000 square feet, compared to a regular Kroger’s 90,000 square feet, said Kroger Corporate Affairs Manager Jessica Sharp.
Marketplaces expand on usual Kroger departments of produce, grocery and general merchandise.
She said Marketplaces add home goods and clothing sections to the department lineup.
“There’s an increased variety of all those departments,” Sharp said.
Lexington’s newest marketplace, a 123,000 square foot facility at 760 Newtown Springs Drive, will include a 18-pump fuel center, drive-thru pharmacy, Little Clinic, Wine and Spirits Shop, Murray’s Cheese Shop, sushi bar, home goods and apparel sections, according to a press release from Kroger.
The Marketplace at Newtown Springs will be the third of its kind in Lexington. Kroger has marketplace locations at Beaumont Centre Circle and Richmond Road. There are 206 marketplace locations nationwide, including one in Versailles.
A proposal for a future fourth Kroger Marketplace at 1811 Winchester Road was filed on May 5. Sharp said marketplaces are developed in places where there is a demand and “larger footprint.”
