Starting this week, parking scofflaws will have to pay more for some parking violations.

LexPark, the city’s parking authority, announced earlier this year it would raise fines on certain parking violations as a way to balance its budget.

LexPark raised fines for “safety violations.” Those safety violations include increased fines for such things as parking in a fire lane or intersection or obstructing traffic.

New rates took effect Sept. 1. Most of the fines will increase from $35 to $50 if paid within 10 days of the issued citation, and from $50 to $65 if paid after 10 days.

The increase in fines will make Lexington’s parking fines in line with other cities including Louisville and Cincinnati, LexPark officials have previously said.

This is the first increase for parking violation fines since 2016. The fine increase does not apply for parking meter violations, LexPark officials have said.

Parking fees for LexPark garages will also increase

Monthly rates to park at one of LexPark’s most popular garages also increased starting Monday.

For Victorian Square Garage, 350 W. Short St., the monthly general parking rate increased from $90 to $105. Reserved parking went from $110 to $130.

The last time rates were raised for Victorian Square was in 2018, LexPark officials have said.
