Five hurt in collision that snarled traffic, shut down interstate in Lexington
A crash involving multiple vehicles shut down a major Lexington artery during rush hour Friday afternoon and sent five people to a local hospital.
Seven vehicles were involved in the collision, which occurred on southbound Interstate 75 at the 113 mile marker at about 3:10 p.m., said Lt. Benjamin Stratton, of the Lexington Police Department.
The five people who were hurt sustained minor injuries, Stratton said.
Stratton said a preliminary investigation indicated the wreck happened when a dump truck encountered slow traffic and was unable to stop in time.
Interstate 75 South was closed at Exit 115, the Newtown Pike exit, in Fayette County, according to Lexwrecks, the social media account of the Lexington Traffic Management Center.
Lexwrecks reported the road closure just after 4 p.m., saying traffic was being diverted off the interstate exit and onto Newtown Pike “until further notice.”
Stratton said the interstate reopened just before 5 p.m.
