University of Kentucky HealthCare plans to put an outpatient treatment center on property it owns in Hamburg, hospital officials confirmed this week.
Plans for the outpatient treatment center, including its size and what types of services it will offer, are still being worked out, said Kristi Willett, a spokeswoman for UK HealthCare.
“UK is in the pre-development phase for the construction of an outpatient medical facility on a portion of the 41 acres acquired in the Hamburg area,” Willett said. “The pre-development phase is a thorough and collaborative process with physician and administrative leadership to define the multidisciplinary, specialty needs for this facility.”
A timeline for construction has not been decided, she said.
“No construction by UK has begun on the site,” Willett said.
UK HealthCare announced in 2022 it would build a new hospital and other clinical offices on the Hamburg site, which is adjacent to Hamburg East, a new multi-use development that will include apartments, hotels, restaurants and retail space.
But in 2023, UK quietly abandoned plans for a new hospital.
UK HealthCare underwent a “strategic refresh” in April 2023, and scrapped the idea of a community hospital, UK officials said in 2024.
Still, the location, near Interstate 64 and Interstate 75 is ideal for new, expanded health care facilities, hospital officials have said.
Many of UK and Lexington area healthcare providers’ patients come from the surrounding counties.
The land is also near Baptist Health Lexington’s Hamburg campus off of Polo Club Boulevard and Winchester Road in the growing Hamburg area. The area is part of the 1997 expansion area of the urban service or growth boundary.
