Are Lexington’s roads cleared after winter storm? See then-and-now videos

It’s been four days since Winter Storm Fern dumped 5.5 inches of snow and 1.48 inches of precipitation on Lexington.

While heavy snow was the focus of the forecast, ice proved to be the bigger issue, crippling Lexington roadways.

Wednesday, Mayor Linda Gorton asked residents to be patient when it comes to road conditions. The ice and bitterly cold temperatures have complicated the city’s efforts to plow more than 1,200 miles of city streets, Gorton said during a Wednesday news conference at the city government center.

Many of Lexington’s busiest street are cleared and drivable. But drivers on some major roads, like New Circle Road, are mostly navigating with fewer clear lanes — down from four to two on New Circle.

In the video above, a side-by-side comparison shows road conditions the afternoon the snow storm started Saturday, Jan. 24 compared to four days later, Wednesday, Jan. 28. Despite the improved road conditions, hazards abound such as stuck cars and snow-covered streets.
