LexPark is warning the public about a scam in which fraudulent text messages claim people have unpaid parking tickets.

The parking authority does not use texts to communicate about citations, the Lexington & Fayette County Parking Authority said in a news release Friday afternoon.

The fraudulent texts “include what appear to be legitimate citation numbers and provide a phone number for recipients to call, with the presumed intent to arrange payment,” LexPark said.

Anyone who thinks they might have gotten one of the fraudulent messages was encouraged to report it by calling LexPark at 859-231-7275 or emailing info@LEXPARK.org.

“LEXPARK takes the security of the public seriously,” LexPark Executive Director Laura Boison said in the release. “If you receive a text message claiming to be from LEXPARK about a citation, it is not legitimate.

“We encourage anyone who receives one of these messages to ignore it and report it.”

LexPark said it is working with the Lexington Police Department to investigate the scams.
