Sewer replacement project to shut down part of major Lexington road for 18 months
A major sewer line replacement project will close parts of Tates Creek Road starting in April.
The project will replace 7,200 feet of sewer pipe along Tates Creek Road between Armstrong Mill and Dove Run Road. That section also includes the busy Tates Creek and New Circle Road interchange.
The project is expected to start sometime in late April, depending on weather, city officials said. Lanes on Tates Creek Road will be shut down for the next 18 months.
Dove Run Road will also be shut down when construction reaches that section of road.
“This project will start at the green space near Armstrong Mill and Greentree Road,” said Charles Martin, director of the Division of Water Quality. “Fortunately, the project will move up Armstrong Mill, so we won’t have to work on Greentree again.”
Last year, a lengthy sanitary sewer project was completed on Greentree Road, with 6,000 feet of sanitary sewer line replaced all the way to New Circle Road. There were frequent road closures along Greentree Road, which connects to the Tates Creek schools campus, during that time period, frustrating residents and Tates Creek school parents, students and staff.
The two sewer line project replacements are part of a 2011 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency consent decree which required the city to fix its sewer and stormwater systems.
The city has completed all of its stormwater projects. It has completed 86 of 113 sanitary sewer projects. It has until 2030 to finish those sewer upgrades per the EPA consent decree.
Although there are other sanitary sewer replacement projects underway, Tates Creek will be one of the most visible and cause traffic delays for more than a year, city officials cautioned.
“We appreciate everyone’s patience as we get through construction,” Martin said. “We will do everything we can to keep the project on schedule and minimize traffic disruptions as we improve the sewer system.”
