New additions, construction coming to a Lexington road this summer. What to know

Wilson Downing Road in south Lexington will see changes to address traffic flow this summer, including construction of the city’s first “mini roundabout.”

Construction will close Wilson Downing Road to through traffic from Tates Creek Road to Camelot Drive starting July 6, according to a city news release. Local traffic will be able to reach homes and businesses in the area, and the road is expected to reopen July 31.

The intersection of Wilson Downing Road at Belleau Wood Drive and Walden Drive will be completely closed during construction.

Construction on Wilson Downing Road will begin June 18 to add a new entrance to Pebble Creek Drive. This will allow space to convert the four-way stop at Belleau Wood Drive and Walden Drive to a small roundabout, and will close the current entrance to Pebble Creek Drive from Belleau Wood Drive permanently.

The roundabout will have crosswalks, and pedestrians will need to cross only a single lane of traffic at a time.

A right-turn lane will also be added to eastbound Wilson Downing Road, at the intersection of Tates Creek Road.

The changes are designed to reduce congestion and improve safety for all on the road, according to a statement from the city. Drivers will see detour routes on Tates Creek Road, Laredo Drive and Camelot Drive.
