This weekend, thousands of little plastic yellow ducks will be racing towards the finish line at a popular Lexington pond for a good cause.

The sixth annual Lexington Duck Derby will be noon, June 27 at the pond behind Lexington Green near Palmers Fresh Grill.

All the proceeds from the charity event benefit the children and families the Kiwanis Club of Lexington Blue Grass serves in Central Kentucky.

For $5, you can adopt one duck, which has a waterproof sticker on its bottom. A truck then dumps the ducks into the pond, and they float single file to the finish line. The first 25 ducks to cross the finish line win prizes.

The grand prize if your duck crosses the finish line first is $5,000.

Ducks can be adopted online at duckrace.com/Lexington and come in discounted packages the more you buy. The Kiwanis Club has a goal to sell 10,000 ducks. Two days out from the race, nearly 7,000 had been adopted.

You do not have to be present to win, and the race will be livestreamed at facebook.com/lexingtonduckderby.
