FIFA World Cup fans searching for a place to cheer on Team USA will be able to watch the July 1 match at Kentucky Theatre in downtown Lexington, city officials announced Thursday.

Team USA will play a yet-to-be-determined opponent in San Francisco at 8 p.m. on July 1. Doors at the Kentucky Theatre will open at 7 p.m. and it will be first come, first seated, city officials said Thursday.

“Lexington is a city that loves sports, and loves coming together to celebrate,” Mayor Linda Gorton said. “We are excited to parter with FOX 56 and the Kentucky Theatre to create an experience that invites Lexington residents to participate in the excitement of the World Cup!”

Members of the Lexington Sporting Club’s soccer teams will be in attendance to meet fans. The Lexington Sporting Club will also be selling USA-themed merchandise, and giving fans a free photo opportunity with the women’s recent championship trophy, won last month.

“We can’t think of a better place to watch this historic event than the Kentucky Theatre,” said Fred Mills, who has managed The Kentucky for over 50 years.

The free event will take place in the State Theatre, which is adjacent to the Kentucky and seats approximately 350. Those attending should enter at The Kentucky Theatre marquee.
