Lexington's former Greyhound building moves closer to historic designation

A state review board's decision Wednesday has placed the Lexington Southeast Greyhound Line building on Loudon Avenue one step closer to being listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The city's Historic Preservation Commission voted earlier this month to forward a nomination to the Kentucky Historic Preservation Review Board in Frankfort. The board approved the listing at a Wednesday meeting along with nine other sites statewide, Kentucky Heritage Council officials said in a release Wednesday.

The review board submits the nominations to the National Park Service, which will issue a final determination about the sites within about 60 days, the news release said.

The National Register is the nation's official list of historic and archaeological resources deemed worthy of preservation.

The Lexington facility, built in 1928, became the headquarters for Southeastern Greyhound Lines, the city's largest private employer in the 1940s.
