A Nicholasville man admitted using an assault rifle to rob a Lexington Sunoco gas station Wednesday night, police said.

Kyler Aery, 29, was arrested at 12:44 a.m. Thursday, about two hours after police say the gas station at 755 Newtown Pike was robbed, according to court records.

Aery told police he entered the Sunoco armed with an assault rifle and robbed the store of an estimated $6,000, according to his court records.

The man fled the gas station on foot, police Sgt. Ann Welch said, and was tracked by a K-9 unit to a storage center nearby.

There, Welch said surveillance photos from the gas station were used to help confirm his identity.

Aery was charged with one count of robbery and is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
