Report on cause of stockyards fire nearly complete

Acting Lexington Fire Chief Harold Hoskins said a report detailing the cause of a massive fire that destroyed Blue Grass Stockyards and several area businesses in late January may be released as early as Thursday.

Hoskins said Tuesday that investigators are still finishing up the report. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is helping the city with its investigation.

The property loss could be in the millions of dollars. Hoskins said the city wanted to ensure that the report was thorough and complete before its release.

More than 120 firefighters responded to the fire on Jan. 30. No one was injured, but dozens of cattle were lost in the fire, which destroyed all of the stockyards and several surrounding businesses. Blue Grass Stockyards recently celebrated its 70th year in Lexington. It has moved sales scheduled for Lexington to its stockyards in other cities.
