Sustainable environment grant applications sought

Nonprofit organizations, including schools, churches and neighborhood associations, can apply for a Sustainable Environmental Grant worth up to $5,000 in support of creative, collaborative projects that have a positive environmental impact. Donated materials and volunteer hours may be used to meet the 50 percent match requirement. Eligible projects include litter cleanup, invasive species removal, illegal dump site cleanup and restoration, placement of community trash receptacles, tree planting, streamside restoration, storm drain art, rain barrel workshop, rain garden installation and wildlife habitat development.

The grant is awarded through the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government’s Department of Environmental Quality and Public Works. Recipients will be selected by a review committee. The environmental and social benefits of the project will be considered, along with other criteria as described in the grant application packet.

This is a reimbursement grant. Funds will not be distributed until the project is complete and a final report is submitted and approved. Final reports are due by May 31, 2017.

Applications must be postmarked or submitted to the department’s office by 4:30 p.m. March 18.
