An email from the University of Kentucky administration told students Thursday of three confirmed cases of mumps on campus.

Beginning last week, university health services began seeing cases of parotitis, or swelling of the salivary glands. Of the students tested, three had confirmed cases of the mumps, according to the email.

Mumps is contagious and generally starts with a few days of fever, headache, fatigue, and loss of appetite, and then progresses to swollen salivary glands.

Most of those who contract the mumps recover completely.

University Health Services is working with the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department and the Kentucky Department of Public health to investigate the cases, according to the email.
