Jessamine County notes: Feb. 23

Living with diabetes class is Feb. 25 at health department

The Jessamine County Health Department is sponsoring a free class to help people learn how to live with diabetes. The class will be given by diabetes educators from 9 to 11 a.m. Feb. 25 at 210 Walnut Street in Nicholasville. Topics covered will include healthy eating, low-blood sugar, medicines, monitoring, foot care and long-term complications. Call 859-885-4149, Ext. 1025 to register.

Red Cross volunteers needed

The American Red Cross is looking for volunteers with flexible schedules to respond to single- and multi-family home fires in and around Jessamine County. Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers assist families with shelter, support and access to basic needs immediately following a home fire – often arriving on scene even as the fire is still burning. Orientation for new volunteers is at 6 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Lexington office, 1450 Newtown Pike. Volunteers can apply online at Redcross.org/volunteer or by calling Rich DeAngelis at 859-497-6420.

Cat spay/neuter clinic Wednesday

Jessamine County Animal Care and Control will hold a feline spay/neuter clinic Feb. 24. Cats should be dropped off at the shelter at 120 Fairground Way in Nicholasville by 8 a.m. and picked up at 4 p.m. Cats must be crated. Vouchers are available and cost $55 female, $45 male.
