Parts of the much-loved wooden playground structure at Jacobson Park are starting to come down.

The mazelike playground at the Richmond Road park is closed so construction of the new playground can begin.

The $490,000 project will be accessible to children with disabilities and will have several play areas connected by paths.

Ramona Fry of Element Design, the company contracted to build the new playground, said three of the original wooden towers are included as landscape design features in homage to the old playground. Other wood from the structure will be salvaged and used in signage, boardwalks and seating.

A sign at the site says the new playground is expected to be completed by June. Design plans for the new playground were released two weeks ago.
