Mathews Garden starts to bloom but fate still unknown
Some of the 350 native plant species in the University of Kentucky’s Mathews Garden on South Limestone began blooming this week.
The garden, maintained by biology professor James Krupa, has been under threat since 2014, when UK officials said they would need to tear down two historic houses and the garden in order to accommodate a $65 million renovation of the UK Law School.
On Wednesday, UK spokesman Jay Blanton said workers were tending to trees in the garden this week. Blanton said there have not yet been any final decisions about the fate of the garden.
