The photo was taken on April 12, 1946, the second day of the meet, with 6,000 people in attendance. The parking lot can bee seen behind the grandstand.

The 11-day spring meet was capped off with the 22nd running of the Blue Grass Stakes, featuring a $12,500 purse. By contrast, this year’s purse was $1 million. Admission to the track was $1 for men and 50 cents for women. The photo was published in the Lexington Herald on April 13, 1946.
