From our archives: a view of the Keeneland spring meet 70 years ago

Take a look at this photo our historical photo blog, KyPhotoArchive.com, pulled from our archives. It shows an aerial view of the Keeneland spring meet 70 years ago.

The photo was taken on April 12, 1946, the second day of the meet, with 6,000 people in attendance. The parking lot can bee seen behind the grandstand.

The 11-day spring meet was capped off with the 22nd running of the Blue Grass Stakes, featuring a $12,500 purse. By contrast, this year’s purse was $1 million. Admission to the track was $1 for men and 50 cents for women. The photo was published in the Lexington Herald on April 13, 1946.
