Newtown Pike extension project continues toward South Broadway

Work continues on the extension of Oliver Lewis Way from the Versailles Road corridor to South Broadway.

The project — commonly referred to as the Newtown Pike extension — began more than a decade ago and has been completed in several phases. The current phase stretches from West High Street to Patterson Street, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

This part is expected to be completed in August 2017 and will cost approximately $19 million, transportation cabinet officials said Friday. The next funded phase of the project will be the Scott Street connector from Patterson Street to South Broadway, which will include a bridge over South Broadway.

The project has required the acquisition of 20 to 25 houses and the relocation of those families.

When completed, Newtown Pike and Oliver Lewis Way will connect Interstates 75/64 around northwest Lexington to South Broadway near the University of Kentucky campus.
