One person was killed and two people were injured Thursday afternoon in a crash on southbound Interstate 75 at Athens-Boonesboro Road.

The crash occurred just before 6 p.m. and involved one car, Lexington police Lt. Jackie Newman said.

Ronald Himes, 77, died of blunt force injuries as a result of the crash, according to the Fayette County coroner. Funeral arrangements are pending.

The two people injured in the crash are female, and they were taken to the hospital, Newman said. One sustained minor injuries, and the other was in serious condition with head trauma.

The ramp from Athens-Boonesboro Road and all but one southbound lane of I-75 were closed while police and the coroner’s office investigated.
