A new traffic camera system in Lexington went live Thursday, allowing commuters to take a look at traffic conditions online.
The high-definition cameras are placed at 79 heavy-traffic intersections around the city, and anyone can see the live footage at lexingtonky.gov/traffic. More traffic cameras will be added to other intersections as the network connecting the cameras expands.
The project cost about $170,000 and used existing traffic camera infrastructure.
“This is a big step forward that will become more and more important to citizens as our city continues to grow,” Mayor Jim Gray said in a news release. “This system will put traffic information at your fingertips, available in the car and beyond. It will make traveling around town more convenient and safer.”
