Kids can carry Olympic fever into triathlon on Sunday at Beaumont YMCA

Just as the Olympics come to an end in Rio de Janiero on Sunday, young competitors from around Kentucky will begin to compete in the 12th annual Kids Triathlon at the C.M. Gatton Beaumont YMCA.

Kids will compete in running, swimming and biking, the three core components of a traditional triathlon.

Registration must be completed in advance, either at ymcacky.org or in person at any YMCA of Central Kentucky location. Cost is $45 for YMCA members; $55 for non-members. Registration packets may be picked up from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday or 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Beaumont YMCA.

Race day check-in is 6:15 to 7 a.m. Sunday; a mandatory pre-race meeting for parents and kids will be held at 7:10 a.m. Participants will receive race packets, which include a race shirt, bib, safety pins and swim cap. The triathlon begins at 7:30 a.m. Kids will swim, then bike and finally run. Race segments include:

▪ Ages 6-8: swim 100 yards, bike 2 miles, run  1/2 mile

▪ Ages 9-10: swim 150 yards, bike 4 miles, run 1 mile

▪ Ages 11-12: swim 200 yards, bike 6 miles, run 1 1/2 mile

▪ Ages 13-14: swim 200 yards, bike 6 miles, run 1 1/2 mile

Awards will be presented around 10:15 a.m. at the outdoor pavilion at the Y. For more information or to volunteer to assist with the event, stop by the membership desk at your local Y or call 859-219-9622.
