Updated: 20-year-old Central Kentucky motorcyclist dies after colliding with wood chipper

A man who crashed into a large piece of tree trimming equipment while riding a motorcycle Monday evening has died, according to Nicholasville police.

The accident happened on U.S. 27 just before 7 p.m. Monday. Sgt. Kevin Grimes with the Nicholasville Police Department said the motorcyclist was traveling northbound while a truck pulling a wood chipper was traveling southbound and making a left turn onto Industry Parkway.

The Fayette County Coroner’s office identified the victim as Brayden Lewis, 20, of Nicholasville. He was pronounced dead at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Lewis hit the wood chipper, Grimes said. Witnesses told officers the traffic light was yellow when the truck was in the intersection just before the collision.

“If it wasn’t for the wood chipper I think the guy would’ve just missed everything but I think he didn’t take account for that,” Grimes said.

Lewis was initially taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The entire road except for one lane of southbound traffic was closed while investigators combed through the scene. The road did not fully reopen for about three hours.

The truck driver was uninjured and has not been charged at this time, Grimes said.
