‘The lake is the boss.’ Search for Central Kentucky football player nears a week

Crews continued their search Tuesday morning for a Madison Central High School football player who went missing in Herrington Lake last week.

Emanuel Prewitt, a 17-year-old senior at Madison Central, was swimming with friends from Madison Central when he went missing sometime after 5 p.m. Wednesday, according to Mike Wilder, Boyle County Emergency Management director. Crews searched for Prewitt until dark on Wednesday. They resumed their search around 9 a.m. Thursday and they’ve been searching the lake every day since.

Wilder said the local crews have had a lot of help from other counties, and the public has shown up as well, but at this point, they’re not in need of more people. Wilder said they have sophisticated equipment and the people already helping are enough with the technology they’re using.

“Getting help is not the real problem,” Wilder said. “The lake is the boss.”

Herrington Lake has a lot of ledges and currents that move objects, Wilder said. The “treacherous” bottom makes searches difficult, and the area they’re searching is about 120 feet deep, he said.

The difficulty has caused everyone to get frustrated, Wilder said, and they want to find the body for the family.

“I feel their hurt,” he said.

A GoFundMe has been started to help support the Prewitt family.

Damien Harris, a former Madison Southern High School football standout and currently a running back for the New England Patriots, shared his concern on Twitter Thursday.

Family members, teammates, coaches and others also took to Twitter to talk about Prewitt.
