‘It was really beyond us saving it.’ Fire destroys abandoned home in Madison County

An abandoned house in Richmond was destroyed by a fire Thursday morning.

The fire department received the report of a possible house fire on Squires Alley near Maple Street just after 6 a.m. Thursday, according to fire department Chief Sam Kirby. The house, particularly the front part of it, was well involved with fire when firefighters arrived, Kirby said.

“It was really beyond us saving it, of course you see it now, it’s on the ground,” Kirby said.

The house was abandoned and no one was hurt, according to Kirby. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Kirby said it likely started near the front of the house, as that’s the part that suffered the heaviest damage.

Kirby said firefighters put a high priority on making sure the fire didn’t spread to other nearby residences or grass fields.

A nearby neighbor owns the house. It was given to her after the previous owners died, and she used it to store items, Kirby said.
