‘Good eats.’ Woodford County served school lunch to community affected by power outage
With thousands of Woodford County electric customers still without power after Friday’s wind storm, the local school system stepped in Tuesday to provide a hot lunch to anyone who needed it.
“We just felt like there was a need,” said Woodford County Schools Superintendent Danny Adkins. “Without power, hot meals are at a premium.”
Adkins said 515 meals were served to children and adults Tuesday, many of whom had been without power for four days.
Kentucky Utilities reported more than 3,000 Woodford County customers without power as of 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
On the menu at each of the district’s six schools that provide meals to students was the spaghetti and meatballs that would have served anyway if Tuesday had not been an NTI day in Woodford County.
Among those who took advantage of the opportunity for a hot meal was Woodford County Judge-Executive James Kay, who said in a Twitter post that he stopped in with a representative of the county’s emergency management office.
“EM Deputy Johnny Mills and I went to Woodford County High School to grab some good eats and thank folks for serving our teachers, students and community lunch today,” Kay wrote. “One County. One school. One heartbeat.”
Woodford County students will return to school Wednesday, though the district said in a tweet that it will work with families on an individual basis if they have tardies or absences because of power or other storm-related challenges.
