A man from Harlan County is in jail after being accused of trying to run over a Kentucky State Police trooper with his car.

David Estes, 35, of Dayhoit is facing more than a dozen charges, including two counts of wanton endangerment, fleeing or evading police, menacing, speeding and reckless driving, according to state police.

The incident began at 12:44 a.m. on Oct. 22 when state police Trooper Drew Wilson saw a tan four-door passenger car that appeared to have broken down on the side of U.S. 119, according to state police. When Wilson approached the car, he recognized the driver as Estes, who had active warrants out for his arrest.

Wilson asked Estes to get out of his vehicle, but Estes allegedly tried to run Wilson over with his car instead, according to state police. Wilson pursued Estes’ car for about a mile before Estes lost control and his car got stuck in a ditch, state police say.

Estes then tried to run on foot and struggled with police before being arrested, according to state police.

There was a female passenger in the car with Estes who was uninjured and is not facing charges.

Estes is now being held in the Harlan County jail. His bond is set at $5,000, according to the jail website.
