A Laurel County man has been charged with murder in connection with a crash in which his mother died and three other people were injured.

Chris Francis, 36, of East Bernstadt, had an “abnormally high level” of methamphetamine in his system and was driving on the wrong side of the road when he crashed into another vehicle about six miles north of London on Hensley Road on Sept. 5, according to the Laurel County sheriff’s office.

Francis’ passenger, Holly Francis, 61, died. WKYT reported that she was Chris Francis’ mother.

Three people in the other vehicle were injured, including two who were taken to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, the sheriff’s office said. WKYT reported that two of those in the other vehicle were children.

The sheriff’s office arrested Francis Monday about six miles north of London on Little County Road.

In addition to murder, he is charged with first-degree assault, first-degree wanton endangerment, failure to maintain insurance and driving under the influence, third offense.

The sheriff’s office said Francis was convicted of driving under the influence in 2014 and 2016.

He was being held in the Laurel County jail Tuesday on $250,000 cash bond.
