The director of the daycare center at the Salvation Army in Lexington has been accused of stealing more than $61,000 from the program.

Patricia Mills, 48, of Nicholasville, was arrested Thursday and charged with theft by unlawful deception of $10,000 or more.

Mills allegedly collected $61,142 in cash tuition payments for children enrolled at the Salvation Army’s Early Learning Center, but she never deposited the money into the Salvation Army’s account, Lexington police said in a uniform citation filed in Fayette District Court.

The Early Learning Center served 106 children between ages six weeks and 5 years old in 2018, according to the Salvation Army’s 2018 annual report. The center provides child care, focused literacy activities and early assessments and interventions, according to the report.
