One dead after officer-involved shooting near scene of a fatal crash in Eastern Ky.
The driver of a vehicle that was fleeing from police died after an officer-involved shooting near the scene of a separate fatal crash in Pike County, Kentucky State Police said.
Kentucky State Police said they were working at the scene of a fatal crash on Ky. 805 Tuesday morning when Elkhorn City Police notified them just before 9:30 a.m. that they were trying to stop a vehicle that had turned onto Ky. 805.
Troopers at the scene of the wreck headed toward the fleeing vehicle “in an attempt to protect the scene of the fatal collision,” state police said in a news release.
“While troopers were searching for the vehicle being pursued, they encountered the vehicle approaching them near the scene of the fatal,” state police said. “At this point, the vehicle was traveling in the direction of multiple first responders at the scene of the fatal. Shots were fired and the driver of the vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
The driver has not been publicly identified, and no one else was in the vehicle, state police said.
The shooting happened on Ky. 805 between Jenkins and Dorton.
Details of the fatal collision that was being investigated before the shooting have not been released.
Mountain-Top Media reported that the head-on crash occurred near Shelby Gap at about 3:45 a.m., and that the shooting was just yards away.
