Man sentenced to prison in South Broadway shooting that killed one, injured another
A man who was found guilty in a 2017 daylight shooting that killed one, injured another and endangered several was sentenced Thursday to 25 years in prison.
Dylan Andrew Capps, 22, was convicted in December of murder, first-degree assault and two counts of wanton endangerment. The charges stemmed from a shooting in the parking lot of the Campus View Condominiums off South Broadway on May 22, 2017.
Justin Jenkins, 19, was killed in the shooting and Jordan Wise, who was 20 at the time, was seriously injured. Wise was shot between seven and nine times, but survived and testified in Capps’ December trial.
Before shots were fired, Capps was involved in a dispute between two groups of people in the parking lot. Wise and Jenkins were both part of the group arguing with the group that included Capps.
At some point during the argument, a woman swinging a knife approached Wise, and cut him in the hand, according to trial testimony.
Wise didn’t see who had stabbed him, but swung at the person, he said at trial. When Wise hit the woman, Capps opened fire, striking Wise and Jenkins, other witnesses testified.
Capps later told detectives that he fired all of the bullets in his .40-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun, 14 rounds in total. After the shots were fired, Capps and the people he arrived with drove from the scene, according to witnesses.
Fayette County Circuit Judge Thomas L. Travis followed the jury’s recommendation when he handed down the 25 year sentence.
Capps plans to get his G.E.D. and vocational training during his 25 year prison sentence, said Rawl Kazee, Capps’ attorney.
