Lexington police who responded to a call about shots fired near Transylvania University Friday afternoon found a wounded man who died at the scene.

Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn said police were investigating the man’s death as a homicide.

The man, whose name had not been released, was in his early 40s, Ginn said.

Ginn said he was not releasing the specific cause of the man’s death. He said the man died as a result of “wounds” that he received. He said an autopsy would be conducted.

Police who were called to the 400 block of Smith Street at about 3:15 p.m. regarding a report of shots fired found the man with life-threatening injuries, said Lexington police Lt. Ronald Keaton.

He confirmed that police were conducting a death investigation. He said there were no suspects in the case as of about 5:15 p.m.

“We just don’t have a whole lot right now to go off of,” Keaton said.

Transylvania put out a safety alert to the campus community about a shooting in the area of Smith Street.
