KY constable faces potential of life in prison on charge related to shooting FBI agent

A Pulaski County constable faces the potential of life in prison after being charged with trying to kill a FBI special agent.

A federal grand jury indicted Gary E. Baldock, 55, on the charge Thursday.

A grand jury initially indicted Baldock and Mike “Wally” Wallace, 45, another Pulaski County constable, on Feb. 27 on a charge of violating the civil rights of people to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures, and from having their property taken without the proper process.

The charge means they allegedly conducted illegal searches and took property, such as cash, without due process.

Several people charged with drug crimes have alleged that the constables took money from them but didn’t turn it all in as evidence, or planted drugs on them, according to defense attorneys.

Constables are elected in Kentucky and have full arrest powers.

Baldock allegedly shot an FBI agent trying to arrest him early March 6.

The grand jury added against Baldock two charges: attempted murder of an FBI agent and the use of a .40-caliber Glock pistol during a crime of violence.

The maximum penalty for a conviction on the civil rights charge would be 10 years.

The attempted murder charge is punishable by up to 20 years in prison, while the sentence on the gun charge ranges from at least 10 years up to life, according to the indictment.

Wallace and Baldock pleaded not guilty on the original indictment but will be arraigned on the new one.

Wallace was released from custody pending trial, but Baldock has been held since he was arrested March 6.
