Eastern Kentucky man dies after being shot in confrontation with deputy, Kentucky State Police

A man died after an officer-involved shooting in Knox County early Saturday.

Kentucky State Police said they were called to help a Knox County sheriff’s deputy who was responding to a complaint in the Gray community just before 1 a.m. Saturday.

The deputy had been called to the area to investigate a complaint about a suspicious vehicle on Owens Hollow Road, and while he was looking for the vehicle, someone “fired multiple shots from a residence,” state police said.

When the deputy and state troopers approached the residence “with their blue lights activated,” state police said Thomas Owens came out with a rifle, which he pointed at the state police. Owens “failed to comply” with orders from the troopers, state police said.

State police said “shots were fired,” and Owens, 49, of Gray, was fatally struck.

The Knox County Coroner pronounced him dead at the scene.

State police said their Critical Incident Response Team is investigating.
