Updated: Police searching for suspect after shooting near a Lexington Jimmy John’s

Lexington police have disclosed the identity of a suspect accused of shooting a man at a Lexington apartment complex outside of Man o’ War Boulevard Tuesday.

Danny Ray Bixler, 28, is the suspect who police and a witness said fired at the victim as he ran to the adjacent Mapleleaf Drive shopping center with a Jimmy John’s and Dollar Tree. Bixler is wanted for assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, police said.

Police did not release the name of the 35-year-old victim who was shot multiple times. The two “had been in an ongoing dispute” before the gunfire unfolded at the Derbytowne apartment complex, according to a news release.

After the shooting, the victim was taken by private vehicle to the St. Joseph East Hospital and transferred to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, police Lt. Andrew Daugherty said Tuesday.

Daugherty also said Tuesday that the suspect was a light-skinned black man with blonde dreadlocks. He was carrying a handgun and wearing a white shirt and gray pants.

A possible location for Bixler was identified Tuesday, but police did not disclose the location. Nevertheless, the police emergency response unit later arrived at the apartment complex, indicating police were looking there.
