They were ‘hanging out.’ Then, a 16-year-old died in Lexington, another was charged.
A 16-year-old boy has been charged in connection with the killing of another teen Tuesday in the Woodhill area, the Lexington Police Department announced Thursday.
The juvenile suspect has been charged with reckless homicide, handgun possession by a minor and evidence tampering, police said. He was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon and is currently in the Fayette Regional Juvenile Detention Center, police said.
The victim was Ladonya Bennett, a 16-year-old boy, the Fayette County coroner’s office said Thursday. Bennett died at the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital at 4:56 p.m. Tuesday.
Officers responded to a shots-fired call just before 3 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Woodhill Drive and Hedgewood Court, police said. They found the victim, who had been shot once, lying on the ground, police said.
An investigation found that the suspect, victim and others were “hanging out” in the area when the shooting occurred, according to police. Three other teens in the group have been charged with handgun possession by a minor and evidence tampering, police said.
Police also said that it does not appear as though the two teens were in a dispute when the shooting happened.
Police did not release the names of any of those charged because they are juveniles.
