Man wanted in Ohio was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Eastern Kentucky

A man accused of firing shots at people in Ohio died in an officer-involved shooting near the Johnson-Martin county line Thursday, state police said.

The sheriff’s office in Richland County, Ohio, contacted Kentucky State Police Wednesday night and asked for help finding the man who had allegedly fired shots at two people and was thought to be in the Wittensville area of Johnson County, state police said in a news release Friday.

State police said they and local law enforcement officers began looking for the man, who they found driving a box van at about 1 a.m. Thursday.

After a low-speed pursuit, state police said the man stopped on Ky. 40 near Ky. 3039 in the Spring Knob Road area and barricaded himself in the van.

“The suspect made statements to local dispatch that he had several loaded firearms, and for the officers to leave the scene,” state police said in a news release.

When the man pointed a handgun at state police and local law enforcement officers, “shots were fired and the male subject was pronounced deceased at the scene by Martin County coroner’s office,” state police said.

Martin County Coroner Chris Todd identified the man as Timothy Alan Gilbert, 43. He said he pronounced Gilbert dead at 3:42 a.m. Thursday.

State police said the Johnson and Martin County sheriff’s departments were also at the scene.

State police said their Critical Incident Response Team is investigating.
