Special prosecutor assigned for misconduct investigation of Kentucky sheriff’s office

An investigation has been launched into the Trigg County sheriff’s office regarding criminal misconduct among members of the office, Kentucky State Police said.

The attorney general’s office has assigned a special prosecutor to the case “in the event charges are filed,” KSP said. KSP Post 1 said Wednesday that it received a complaint regarding the issue.

Trigg County Judge-Executive Hollis Alexander said he was informed of the investigation in mid-April, and was also told the FBI is running a “concurrent” investigation alongside KSP.

Timothy Bean, a spokesman for the FBI’s Louisville field office, said the FBI was “not in a position to comment” on the matter at this time.

Trooper Adam Jones said KSP would release other information in coordination with the attorney general’s office after the investigation was over.

KSP is also currently investigating one of its own troopers for alleged misconduct while detaining two teenagers in Lexington. The trooper, along with multiple Lexington police officers, is accused of assault and criminal misuse of force against a teenage couple who they thought had committed fraud. The teens were eventually released without any charges filed.

In body camera footage, the state trooper can be seen pulling a teenage girl out of a car by her hair and helping pull her to the ground.

Kentucky State Police Sgt. Joshua Lawson said in an email Friday night that the state police are “reviewing available information and will be investigating KSP’s involvement.”
