Updated: Lexington shooting victim dies despite police attempts to save him

The victim of a shooting at a Lexington Motel 6 has died, according to the Fayette County coroner’s office. The death has been ruled a homicide.

James Adroiunt White, 40, was shot in the thigh Tuesday morning while at the Motel 6 on Newtown Court, Lexington police and the coroner said. He died at University of Kentucky Hospital a little over an hour after the shooting, the coroner said.

The shooting happened about 9:20 a.m., according to Lt. Andrew Daugherty. Investigators happened to be nearby working on something unrelated when the shooting occurred, and one of them was able to help apply a tourniquet, police said. It may have kept White from dying on the scene, police said.

“Luckily we had a detective that was in the area that was able to put a tourniquet on,” Daugherty said. “It was a lot of blood.”

White’s death is the 15th Lexington homicide in 2020. There had been 10 homicides at this point in 2019, which was a record-setting year.
