Updated: Teenager dies after he was shot in residential Lexington area, coroner says

A teen has died after being shot in Lexington Monday night, according to the Fayette County coroner’s office.

Miguel Diaz, 19, was shot on Speigle Street, the coroner’s office said. Although the coroner said Diaz died at the scene, police previously said Diaz initially was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The death is the 17th homicide in Lexington this year, according to Lexington Police Department statistics. There were 12 homicides at this time last year, but 2019 ended with 30, which was a record for Lexington.

Officers initially responded to the 400 block of Speigle Street for a shots-fired call around 7:15 p.m. and found Diaz, Lt. Chris Van Brackel said.

Police also found a car damaged in the shooting, Van Brackel said.

Speigle is between Manchester Street and Versailles Road.

Sgt. Donnell Gordon said police were still investigating and gathering suspect information. Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact police by calling (859) 258-3600. People can also submit anonymous tips by using a free P3 Tips app available at www.p3tips.com.

Gordon said information can also be sent anonymously through Bluegrass Crime Stoppers at (859) 253-2020 or www.bluegrasscrimestoppers.com.
