Man charged with murder after officers found his girlfriend dead, Lexington police say

A man has been charged with murder in the death of his girlfriend, Lexington police said.

James A. Aubrey, 56, was arrested Wednesday after police said they found 57-year-old Karen Rae Greenup of Georgetown dead in a home on Warwick Court. Officers found her Monday night when they were sent to the home for a welfare check.

Investigators determined Aubrey allegedly assaulted Greenup, police said.

Aubrey was charged with murder, evidence tampering and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, police said. He was taken to the Fayette County Detention Center Wednesday.

There have been 19 homicides in Lexington this year. The city had 30 in 2019, its highest single-year total.
