Man exchanges gunfire with state trooper on Main Street in Kentucky town
A McCreary County man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder of a police officer after exchanging shots with a Kentucky State Police trooper.
A state trooper saw Christopher A. Phillips, 35, walking on Main Street in Whitley City at 10:39 a.m. Friday and recognized him as having outstanding warrants for his arrest on felony charges, according to a uniform citation filed by police in McCreary District Court.
When the trooper told him to stop, Phillips ran, pulled a .22-caliber semi-automatic handgun from his waistband and shot at the trooper, according to the citation.
The trooper returned fire, and Phillips ran across several properties until he lost his balance and fell on Williamsburg Street. He was then arrested.
State police said in a news release that no one was injured in the shooting.
Phillips was taken to the McCreary County Detention Center and charged with attempted murder of a police officer, possession of a stolen firearm, fleeing and evading and resisting arrest, state police said.
