Kentucky man leads authorities on chase after being shot by a deputy, police say

A Cumberland County man is at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital after a sheriff’s deputy shot him Monday, according to Kentucky State Police.

Kevin M. Starks, a 40-year-old Burkesville resident, was shot by a Cumberland County deputy after Starks refused to cooperate and hit a deputy with his vehicle, according to KSP.

Authorities were originally dispatched to a residence on Rose of Sharon Road for a domestic violence dispute around 4:30 p.m., police said. Starks tried to leave the scene in a 2009 Ford Flex when he hit a deputy and struck a cruiser. At that point, a deputy shot Brooks in the shoulder area, Trooper Nick Hale said.

After being shot, Starks continued to flee, police said. He led law enforcement on a short chase before being taken into custody without further incident, police said.

Starks’ injuries aren’t life-threatening, police said. He was taken to Cumberland County Hospital before being airlifted to UK Hospital.

The incident is being investigated by KSP Post 15, and criminal charges are pending by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department, police said.
