Former Tates Creek basketball player’s death being investigated as homicide

The Lexington Police Department is investigating the death of a teen early Sunday morning as a homicide, according to the Fayette County Coroner’s Office.

Mykel Waide, 18, died at 3:17 a.m. Sunday in the area of 1080 Newtown Pike, according to the coroner’s office. The cause of Waide’s death is still under investigation.

Officers were called to the Newtown Pike area at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday for a report of a large disorder with shots fired, according to Lexington police. Waide died at the scene and three others were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Tates Creek High School boys’ basketball team posted on Twitter on Sunday that Waide had been a member of the team and was set to start school at the University of Louisville this week.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our very own Mykel Waide,” the team said on Twitter. “He was more than an athlete, he was a son, brother & scholar, set to begin his first year at UofL on Monday. His family is in our prayers and we ask that our team be in all of yours.”
