Lexington police trying to determine who shot a woman after arresting defiant suspect

Despite finding a victim and detaining a suspect, Lexington police still didn’t know who shot a woman on Ohio Street early Friday morning.

Officers responded to the shooting around 6:30 a.m. Friday, police said. They found a 31-year-old woman with a gunshot wound that wasn’t life-threatening, police said. But a man was dragging her, according to WKYT, the Herald-Leader’s reporting partner. The woman told police she shot herself, but the man dragging her said someone else shot at them, according to WKYT.

The man, 32-year-old Jonathan Cordell Wilkerson, was taken into custody by police as a suspect, according to spokeswoman Brenna Angel. He was combative and had to be put in a wrap, Angel said.

He was charged with assaulting an officer, disorderly conduct, cocaine possession, menacing, and public intoxication (excluding alcohol). He was also charged with failure to appear and a probation violation for past offenses. He had not been charged for the shooting

Because of the conflicting information police have received, it was unclear who shot the woman, Angel said. The case was still under investigation.
