Luxury cars, apartment rentals. Police: Central Kentucky man used ID theft to pay

A Nicholasville man is accused of using fraud and identity theft to buy luxury vehicles and rent apartments in multiple states for the past several months, according to Lexington police.

Kenneth Mobley, 39, obtained two Dodge Challenger Hellcats, a BMW convertible and two Maserati coupes, according to Lexington police. The five vehicles were valued at $305,000.

An investigation into Mobley began in March when Lexington investigators determined he used a fraudulent check to purchase the BMW from a local car dealership, police said. He also allegedly used a fraudulent check to rent an apartment.

Mobley was arrested in Tampa, Fla., later that month, police said. He was charged with fraud, according to court records.

But Mobley returned to Kentucky earlier this month, according to police. One of the Hellcats he obtained was found crashed and abandoned on Chestnut Street, police said.

Mobley had used a California man’s identity to obtain both Hellcats and the two Maserati coupes, police said.

He also used that identity to rent apartments in Clearwater, Fla., Lexington and Nicholasville, according to police.

When Mobley was apprehended by Kentucky State Police on Sept. 3, he had two handguns, blank credit cards, checks, a credit card re-embossing machine, fraudulent driver’s licenses from California and New Jersey and small amounts of heroin and meth, according to police. KSP had also conducted investigations into Mobley’s alleged crimes.

Mobley has been charged with receiving goods by fraud, identity theft, possessing a forged instrument, stealing property, making false credit cards, possession of a gun by a convicted felon and possession of drugs.
