The Versailles Police Department is investigating the theft of several trophies that belonged to decorated horse trainer Wesley Ward.

The incident took place at Ward’s home Tuesday morning, according to Ward. He said the trophies weren’t on display and instead were in a bag inside a closet.

The valuables that were stolen were all of Ward’s Royal Ascot victories and one Breeders Cup Trophy. Other belongings that were in the closet, including other trophies from other races, were left behind, leaving Ward to wonder why the Royal Ascot trophies were targeted.

“The only person that they’re of value to is me,” Ward said. “It’s quite a shame.”

The Royal Ascot trophies are extra valuable to Ward in particular. He became the first American trainer to saddle a winner at Royal Ascot when Strike the Tiger won the Windsor Castle at odds of 33-1 in 2009, according to Keeneland.

The next day, Ward won again at the Queen Mary (G2) with Jealous Again. The Queen of England presented Ward with the trophy in front of his three children, a memory Ward said he and they will never forget.

Ward hopes the police find his trophies. He has submitted video and still images from his outdoor Nest camera at the time of the theft to police.

Versailles police wouldn’t elaborate on the investigation since it’s ongoing.
