Coroner identifies Lexington’s 28th homicide victim of this year. Suspect arrested

The Fayette County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim in a shooting that took place on Friday morning.

James Allen Palmaiter, 44, was shot and killed around 1:50 a.m. Friday in the 1800 block of Augusta Drive, according to the coroner’s office and Lt. Joe Anderson with the Lexington Police Department. Officers were responding to a report of a subject down and found a dead male with a gunshot wound on scene, according to Anderson.

Lexington police said the suspect, identified as Sean Smith, 53, has been charged with murder and wanton endangerment. Fayette County Detention Center records say Smith was booked in at 8:43 a.m. Friday and is being held without a bond.

Anderson said Friday morning that police were still investigating the shooting and working to determine what led up to the incident.

It’s the city’s 28th homicide of 2022, which is nine short of the annual record set last year.
